The Mayfield explore les collisions accidentelles pour ce projet oscillant entre musique noise industrielle et musique concrète instrumentale.
Le travail de The Mayfield s’articule autour de l’improvisation collective et des collisions accidentelles et inattendues que celle-ci génère. Le dispositif instrumental réuni provoque la rencontre de sources sonores à la fois acoustiques et électroniques entre instruments traditionnels, hybrides et contemporains : percussions, appréhendées comme source originelle et universelle de l’expression musicale, et aussi des chants d’oiseaux, un saxophone, un piano préparé ou encore les ondes Martenot, un des tout premiers instruments électroniques. Aussi une guitare électrique augmentée de capteurs numériques faisant le lien entre ces différents univers sonores.
La musique de The Mayfield s’exprime au milieu de ces paysages entre une musique de bruits composites et une réelle musique concrète instrumentale.
Les musiciens de The Mayfield ont créé la musique du spectacle Everything that happened and would happen d’Heiner Goebbels : une pièce de théâtre musical sur l’Europe, appréhendée comme un « chantier », à la fois travaillé par l’histoire et le contemporain.
Le groupe porte le nom de Mayfield, une vaste gare ferroviaire désaffectée de Manchester, dans laquelle l’œuvre a été crée. La gare fut construite en 1910 puis abandonnée dans les années 1980, et son athmosphère sombre, froide, humide et sale a inspiré la pièce ainsi que son esthétique musicale.
Depuis sa création en 2018 au Manchester International Festival, elle a été jouée à de multiples reprises en 2019 au Park Avenue Armory de New York, lors du Festival Ruhrtriennale de Bochum, et au Theatre Olympics de Saint-Pétersbourg. Sa reprise au Vienna Festwochen en mai 2020 a été annulée en raison de la pandémie.

The Mayfield explores accidental collisions in a project that oscillates between industrial noise music and instrumental musique concrète.
In this residence The Mayfield concentrates on their practice of collaborative improvisation on the look-out for unintentional collisions and artistic surprises. The instrumentation is dedicated to a coexistence of acoustic and electronic sources, raising from percussion, as the earliest and universal source of musical expression, to birdcalls, saxophones and prepared grand piano; to ondes Martenot, one of the first electronic instruments. An invented electric guitar added with digital sensors make a link between those different sonic universes. The Mayfield music results in soundscapes between controlled noise and ‘musique concrête instrumentale’.
The instrumentalists of The Mayfield created together the music to the large scale performance Everything that happened and would happen by Heiner Goebbels: A music theatre piece on Europe as a historical and contemporary ‘construction site.‘ The band is named after the Mayfield depot , is a vast disused railway station in Manchester, in which they rehearsed and created the work. It was built in 1910, abandoned in the 80s, and it’s dark, cold, wet and dirty character inspired the play as well as the aesthetics of the music.
Since the premiere 2018 at the Manchester International Festival it was performed in 2019 many times in the Park Avenue Armory in New York, during the Festival Ruhrtriennale in Bochum, and at the Theatre Olympics in St. Petersburg. A continuation at the Vienna Festwochen in May 2020 was cancelled due to the Pandemic.
The Mayfield performed 2019 at the Wall of Sounds – Festival Palermo, 2020 in Germany at the moers festival and at AngelicA – Festival Internazionale di Musica in Bologna.
