Pour newpolyphonies, Myriam Van Imschoot s’est inspirée aussi bien des insectes que des marches pour le climat ; également des récentes manifestations organisées contre les mesures d’économies imposées dans le secteur artistique et au sein de la société civile. Le cri de la foule ne constitue pas le fil conducteur, mais plutôt l’expérience que chaque individu – tel un rouage dans un moteur – est à même d’activer un vortex de sons.
La polyphonie est l’art des voix individuelles qui se combinent pour former une grande cohérence harmonique. Dans newpolyphonies, la polyphonie est à la fois le déclencheur et la question. Comment pouvons-nous comprendre cet héritage musical à l’heure actuelle ? Quel est le potentiel de l’harmonie ? Un groupe de participants locaux se produit sur scène conjointement avec l’ensemble vocal HYOID. Ensemble, ils se déplacent tout en créant un chant en masse, souvent à la limite de l’audible. newpolyphonies est une étrange grand-messe consacrée à la petite différence capable d’exercer un grand impact.

For newpolyphonies, Myriam Van Imschoot was inspired by insects, climate marches and the recent manifestations against cutbacks in the arts and civil society. The guiding principle is not the loud chanting of the crowd, but the experience that each individual – like a link in chain – can set a vortex of sounds in motion.
Polyphony is the art of individual voices interwoven into a great harmonic coherence. In newpolyphonies, polyphony is both the trigger and the question. How can we understand this musical legacy today? What is the potential of harmony? A group of local participants perform on stage together with the vocal ensemble HYOID. Together, they engage in mass singing, often on the verge of audibility. newpolyphonies is a curious high mass about the small difference that makes a big impact.
Myriam Van Imschoot
Artiste belge, Myriam Van Imschoot crée des performances, de la poésie sonore et des pièces vocales, expose des installations vidéo et sonores. Elle occupe une position unique dans le champ de l’art belge, se déplaçant entre les champs institutionnels et les médias, et elle prend plaisir à expérimenter avec des contextes lorsqu’elle ne crée pas les siens. Fascinée par les phénomènes de communication longue distance, Van Imschoot s’est lancée dans un cycle de pièces (YOUYOUYOU, What Nature Says, e.a.) qui abordent le yodel, les cris, les signes de la main, et les cris d’oiseaux.
Elle a ainsi travaillé avec des collaborateurs sur des pièces de théâtre participatives et des représentations artistiques inspirées par des pratiques avec un potentiel démocratique. En parallèle à ses prestations, elle a réalisé 8 films, Le Cadeau étant le dernier d’une série dédiée aux voix. Ses oeuvres ont été présentées au Kaaitheater, Vooruit, Actoral, Museo Reina Sofia, HAU, Brakke Grond, Pact Zollverein, e.a.
Ensemble HYOID
Ensemble bruxellois de chanteurs solistes spécialisés en musiques contemporaine et expérimentale. L’expérience d’une large palette de modes de jeux de ces chanteurs de formation classique lui permet d’aborder chaque nouvelle production avec une grande ouverture d’esprit. Le groupe cultive des relations étroites avec compositeurs, instrumentistes, performers et artistes de sa génération.
HYOID s’est produit dans des salles et festivals tels que le Blurred Edges festival, le Goethe Institut à Paris et de Bijloke, et collaboré avec l’ensemble Aton’&Armide, le Centre Henri Pousseur et le vidéaste Klaas Verpoest. En 2017, HYOID a créé A History of the Voice de Jennifer Walshe au Festival Transit et a été donné aux festivals de Huddersfield, November Music et Soundsofmusic, salué par un vif succès critique. En 2018, HYOID s’est produit avec la compagnie théâtrale Ontroerend Goed pour la production Loopstation, créée à Vooruit puis au KVS dans le cadre du Klara Festival.

Myriam Van Imschoot
Myriam Van Imschoot makes performances, creates sound poetry and vocal pieces, exhibits video and sound installations. She holds a unique position in the Belgian art field, moving between institutional fields and media, with a keen interest to experiment with contexts when not creating her own.
Fascinated by phenomena of long-distance communication, Van Imschoot has created a cycle of works (YOUYOUYOU, What Nature Says, a.o.) that deal with yodelling, crying, waving and bird calls. She also worked with collaborators on participatory theater or performance pieces inspired by practices that hold a certain democratic potential.
In parallel to her performance work she directed eight films, Le Cadeau being the last film in a series on vocalists. Her work has been presented at Sculpture International Rotterdam, Kaaitheater, Vooruit, Buda, Actoral, Museo Reina Sofia, Hebbel am Ufer, De Brakke Grond, Pact Zollverein, Kiasma Theater, MUU Galeria, a.o.
HYOID
HYOID is a Brussels based group of vocal soloists specialized in new music. The classically trained singers’ vast experience and extended techniques enable HYOID to approach every production with an open mind. The group strives to challenge and expand the traditional concert formats, while cultivating close partnerships with composers, performers and artists of its generation.
HYOID performed at venues such as the Blurred Edges festival in Hamburg, the Goethe Institute in Paris and De Bijloke in Gent, and collaborated with Aton’&Armide, Centre Henri Pousseur and video artist Klaas Verpoest among others. In 2017, HYOID premiered ‘A History of the Voice’ by Irish composer Jennifer Walshe at Transit – Festival 20/21. It received considerable critical acclaim and was also performed at November Music and SoundsOfMusic (NL). In 2018, HYOID premiered ’Loopstation’, a play by Gent based theatre group Ontroerend Goed, at Vooruit, Gent, and at KVS during the Klara Festival.
