Die Erdfabrik (« La Fabrique de la terre ») nous emmène dans un voyage sonore, poétique et visuel au coeur de la mine, tout un monde invisible faisant écho au cycle de la vie. En explorant ce monde souterrain, Aperghis interroge poétiquement l’utilisation humaine de l’énergie fossile et sa fabrication, qui est indissociable de la lumière, du végétal, du vivant.
Lorsque le festival de la Ruhrtriennale sollicite Georges Aperghis pour écrire une nouvelle œuvre mettant en valeur son patrimoine industriel, il se passionne pour l’histoire de son bassin minier dont l’activité a creusé et créé tout un monde caché fait d’obscurité, tirant pourtant sa source de l’énergie première, la lumière. Le charbon, matériau brut constitué sur plusieurs millions d’années, porte en lui la mémoire de la Terre, et sa combustion jusqu’à épuisement en interroge en filigrane son devenir.
Le compositeur Georges Aperghis et l’écrivain Jean-Christophe Bailly partent à la recherche de cette mémoire, dans un voyage musical dont la plus sûre compagne est cette obscurité plus noire que la nuit : elle suscite peurs et insomnie, mais sur son chemin, on se laisse surprendre par ses mystères et des jeux anciens.
En interagissant avec des dessins animés éphémères et changeants, cinq musiciens – aux instruments parfois insolites – évoquent la scène avec des sons, des mots et des corps : ensemble, ils creusent l’obscurité, tâtonnent dans les cavités, rencontrent les peurs imaginaires enfantines.
La mine devient un lieu poétique dont Aperghis et Bailly mettent à jour la richesse des associations. Plus on s’enfonce dans les profondeurs, plus on s’élève vers le ciel. À 300 millions d’années de profondeur, on tombe sur du charbon. Jean-Christophe Bailly, qui recourt à la poésie d’Annette von Droste-Hülshoff et à ses propres écrits, l’appelle ‘l’enfant de la lumière’. Car cette matière fossile des temps primitifs était autrefois une végétation vivante nourrie par le soleil. Le voyage opère un renversement : du charbon, remonter le temps et extraire la lumière originelle.
La combinaison des contraires et leurs interactions – obscurité et lumière, gravité et légèreté, courage et peur, étendues et détails –, sont les moteurs du théâtre musical d’Aperghis. Une forme poétique et abstraite de théâtre musical dont les personnages rayonnent pour permettre à nos imaginaires d’en dessiner l’histoire.

Die Erdfabrik (“The Earth Factory”) takes us on a sonic, poetic and visual journey into the heart of the mine, an invisible world that echoes the cycle of life. By exploring this underground world, Aperghis poetically questions the human use of fossil fuel and its manufacture, which is inseparable from light, plants and life.
When the Ruhrtriennale festival asked Georges Aperghis to write a new work highlighting its industrial heritage, he became fascinated by the history of the coal-mining region, whose activity had dug out and created a whole world hidden in the bowels of the earth, made of darkness, yet drawing its source from the primary energy, light. Coal, a raw material formed over millions of years, carries within it the memory of the Earth, and its burning to exhaustion raises questions about its future.
Composer Georges Aperghis and writer Jean-Christophe Bailly set off in search of this memory, on a musical journey whose surest companion is this darkness blacker than night: it arouses fears and insomnia, but along the way we are surprised by its mysteries and ancient games.
Interacting with ephemeral, ever-changing cartoons, five musicians – some with unusual instruments – evoke the scene with sounds, words and bodies: together, they dig into the darkness, grope in the cavities, encounter imaginary childhood fears.
The mine becomes a poetic place where Aperghis and Bailly reveal a wealth of associations. The deeper you go, the higher you reach for the sky. At a depth of 300 million years, we come upon coal. Jean-Christophe Bailly, drawing on the poetry of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff and his own writings, calls it “the child of light”. For this fossil material from primitive times was once living vegetation nourished by the sun. The journey brings about a reversal: from coal, back in time and extracting the original light.
The combination of opposites and their interactions – darkness and light, gravity and lightness, courage and fear, expanse and detail – are the driving forces behind Aperghis’s musical theater. A poetic, abstract form of musical theater whose characters shine out, allowing our imaginations to draw the story.
